Invisible Fences: Do or Don’t?

May 15 2021

Do you have a yard for your dog to play in? If so, that’s great. Our canine companions love to run and play outside. Fido will both enjoy and benefit from having a fenced-in yard to chase squirrels around in. If you’re looking at installing fencing, so your pooch can have a safe outdoor play space, you may be wondering about invisible fences. A local veterinarian lists a few things to consider with these below.

Pros

Invisible fences really do offer some appealing benefits. One of their bigger selling points is the fact that they are quite affordable, especially with the cost of materials on the rise. If you live in an HOA, you may also be spared the hassle of making sure that your fence is up to their standards and codes, though this of course depends on the HOA and its rules. Invisible fences can be used on any type of terrain, and are quick and easy to put in. You also don’t have to worry about a hurricane knocking it over! Last but not least, because they are invisible, they won’t obstruct your views.

Cons

On the other paw, invisible fences also do have some downsides. For one thing, they are definitely not ‘plug and play.’ You’ll need to teach Fido where the fence is, which means taking time to walk him along the perimeter and work with him. Most manufacturers do offer directions on this, and some will even work with you directly. That is also something for you to consider when shopping. Another thing to keep in mind is the fact that invisible fences won’t keep other animals out of your yard. If you live in a place with a lot of snakes or gators, that’s definitely something to think about! Reliability is another issue. If the power is ever disrupted, you’re going to be down a fence until it’s restored. These fences do make dogs uncomfortable. Fido may get confused or agitated by his invisible adversary. Finally, some dogs will just ignore the fence and bolt through anyway.

Tips

Still on the fence? You’ll also need to consider your pet’s personality and temperament. If you have an active dog that is pretty likely to run, like a husky, an invisible fence isn’t going to be the best option for you. Generally, these are likely to work best in quiet areas, and with pups that will probably stick close by anyway. That said, that some of the pros we listed can become cons in certain circumstances. For instance, an invisible fence won’t mar your view, but it also won’t offer you the privacy that another type of fence would. That’s a matter of preference. Our take? These can work, but physical fences are the better choice in most situations.
