Did you know that the AKC welcomed some new pups into its roster this year? One of the most striking is without a doubt the Hungarian Mudi, a smart, energetic herding dog from Hungary. A local vet introduces Fido in this article.
Basics
Mudis are about medium sized. They usually stay between 15 and 19 inches tall, and should weigh between 18 and 30 pounds. Their life expectancy is also average for our canine buddies, at about 12 to 14 years.
Temperament
These devoted pooches are known for being loyal and protective, but are not generally aggressive. Fido is an extremely smart and versatile pup! The Mudi excels in herding, but also shines in many other areas, such as search and rescue.
Close Call
The Mudi came very close to extinction during World War II. Unfortunately, many were killed during the conflict. Fortunately, devoted breeders worked hard to preserve these wonderful pups. Mudis are still quite rare, though: there are only a few thousand known, with most of those being in Hungary and Finland.
History
The Mudi is a fairly new breed: they were only discovered in 1936 by Dr. Dezso Fenyes. Originally known as “driver dogs,” they are thought to be mixes of the Puli, Pumi, and German Spitz.
Coat
Mudis usually have medium-length coats. One of their unique traits is the fact that they have curly coats! Fido actually has pretty minimal grooming needs: regular brushings and occasional baths will take care of his fur. He’ll also need regular nail trims, as well as dental care.
Tails
Here’s an interesting thing about the Mudi: they can have many different tail lengths. These range from very short, bobbed tails to long full-length ones. They all wag just fine!
Energy Levels
Like other herding dogs, Mudis need plenty of exercise. You’ll need to take your furry friend on a vigorous walk—or even a run—every day. Though Mudis can do fine in apartments if they get enough activity, they really are happiest in a spot where they have lots of room to run around, play, and, of course, chase squirrels.
Sports
Fido can play a variety of doggy sports. He also really loves playing Frisbee! You can also teach him something more complex. Obedience training, flyball, agility, tracking, and herding are just a few of the things on the Mudi’s resume.
