Yorkie Day

August 2 2022

Today, August 1st, is Yorkie Day! These fun-loving dogs may be small, but they definitely have big personalities. A veterinarian turns the spotlight on these tiny, charming pooches below.

Basics

The Yorkie is one of the smaller dog breeds, rarely growing more than 8 inches tall. Like many other small dogs, they do have some longevity, as they can live up to 16 years. That’s a long life for a dog! As far as temperament goes, they are extremely cuddly and affectionate, and love to be lap dogs. However, they can get a bit feisty. It’s also worth noting that Fido is a great little watchdog … insofar as letting you know there’s somebody at the door. However, he also thinks everyone is his best buddy. Yorkies are more vocal than other dogs, so if you want a quiet pooch, they probably aren’t the best choice for you.

Care

Yorkies have long, silky fur, which is a lot like human hair. As far as grooming goes, Yorkies don’t shed or drool a lot. However, they do need daily brushing. As they say, you can’t have it all!

Temperament

Yorkies are very intelligent, and are usually pretty trainable. They are also quite energetic, and need a lot of playtime and stimulation. Fido is prone to separation anxiety, however, and gets very lonely when left by themselves. You may want to get your canine pal a buddy.

Health

Yorkies are prone to a few specific medical issues, such as bronchitis, cataracts, and skin problems. They’re also notorious for having sensitive tummies, so you’ll have to be really careful what you feed Fido. It’s also worth noting that, because of their size (or lack thereof), Yorkies can get seriously hurt in falls: even tumbling off a bed or couch can cause them to be seriously injured! Ask your vet for specific care tips.

Fun Facts

Fido has gained a few nicknames over the years. Yorkies are sometimes called Tomboy Toys, because of their daring, feisty demeanors. They were also once called the Broken-Haired Scotch Terrier, which honestly sounds a bit sad. (We prefer Yorkie)

Famous Yorkies

There have been a couple of celebrity Yorkies. First up, there is Sylvia, the smallest dog in recorded history. She was only 2.4 inches tall! Another standout Yorkie was Smoky, a war hero of World War II. Of course, we think all of these charming, lovable dogs deserve to be celebrated.

Our Advice on Yorkie Day in 2024

What is Yorkie Day and when is it celebrated?

Yorkie Day is a special celebration dedicated to Yorkshire Terriers, affectionately known as Yorkies. This day, celebrated on August 1st, honors these small but spirited dogs, known for their distinct personalities and charming demeanor. It’s a day for Yorkie owners and enthusiasts to appreciate and recognize the unique qualities of this beloved breed. Celebrations often include gatherings of Yorkie owners, special treats for the dogs, and sharing of Yorkie stories and photos on social media. It’s a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the joy and companionship these tiny canines bring to their human families.

How tall do Yorkies typically grow and what is their average lifespan?

Yorkshire Terriers, commonly known as Yorkies, are a small dog breed that typically grows to a height of about 7 to 8 inches at the shoulder. They are known for their compact size and are one of the smaller breeds in the canine world. In terms of lifespan, Yorkies generally have a long life expectancy, often living up to 16 years or more with proper care. Their longevity is a notable characteristic of the breed, reflecting their robust health and the effectiveness of good care and nutrition.

What is the temperament of Yorkies and are they suitable as lap dogs?

Yorkshire Terriers, or Yorkies, are known for their affectionate and spirited temperament. They are extremely cuddly and thrive on close interaction with their owners, making them excellent lap dogs. Yorkies often form strong, loyal bonds with their families and enjoy being involved in daily activities. Despite their small size, they can be quite feisty and assertive, with a larger-than-life personality. This blend of affectionate warmth and playful vivacity makes Yorkies well-suited for families or individuals seeking a loving and engaging canine companion who loves to snuggle and be close.

What are the grooming needs of Yorkies, particularly regarding their fur?

Yorkshire Terriers, known for their long, silky fur, have specific grooming needs to maintain their distinctive appearance. Their coat, which is more akin to human hair than typical dog fur, requires regular care to prevent tangles and mats. Daily brushing is essential to keep their hair smooth and clean. Unlike many breeds, Yorkies don’t shed much, but their fine hair can get knotted easily. Additionally, regular trims are needed to keep their coat manageable and neat. Grooming not only keeps a Yorkie looking good but is also important for their overall skin and coat health.

How intelligent and energetic are Yorkies, and how does this affect their training and play needs?

Yorkshire Terriers, commonly known as Yorkies, are highly intelligent and energetic dogs. Their sharp minds make them quick learners, often excelling in training when given consistent and positive reinforcement. This intelligence, combined with their lively energy, means Yorkies require regular mental and physical stimulation. Engaging play sessions, interactive toys, and training exercises are essential to keep them entertained and prevent boredom. While their small size might suggest limited exercise needs, Yorkies actually benefit from regular, varied activities to satisfy their energetic and inquisitive nature, making them well-suited for active households.
