Ways To Keep Your Pet From Getting Lost

June 15 2022

June is Lost Pet Prevention Month! This is a very important topic, if a sad one. Up to one in three pets are lost or stolen at some point over the course of their lifetimes. That’s a pretty sobering statistic. While we hope all of our patients are safe and sound at home, this is one area where it definitely does pay to take some precautions. A vet lists some key ones below.

GPS Collars

This is a fairly new technology, and one that we are thrilled to see catching on with pet owners. Do some research before purchasing one! You’ll want to look at reviews, of course, but it’s also important to check subscription fees and perks.

Keep Fluffy In

While your kitty may love chasing butterflies, leaving dusty pawprints on your car windshield, and ignoring you when you call her, she’s much safer inside. Keeping your feline friend in won’t only greatly reduce the chances of her getting lost: it also protects her from hazards like cars, weather, and other animals.

Training Fido

Fido should know (and obey) basic obedience commands, such as Sit, Stay, Come, Heel, and Lay Down. This is very important, as that training can keep your pooch from running off if you drop his leash or if he slips out the door.

Leash

Even if your canine companion is really well-trained, it’s always safest to keep him on a leash whenever you take him off your property. Better safe than sorry!

Secure Yard

It’s great when dogs have yards to run and play in. However, Man’s Best Friend has quite a taste of adventure, and is definitely not above sneaking out to go exploring. Make sure that your fencing is secure, and that Fido can’t go over, under, or through it. (We also recommend getting a self-latching gate.)

Vigilance

While pets can—and do—get lost at any time, the chances of this happening go up significantly at certain times. Two of the biggest concerns are July 4th and New Years’ Eve. That’s because the noise of fireworks frightens many pets, causing them to flee in fear. Thunderstorms can also scare our furry pals. Be extra careful at these times!

Spay/Neuter

Did you know that intact pets are more likely to run away than those that have been spayed or neutered? If your pet hasn’t been fixed yet, make that appointment today!
