National Beagle Day

April 15 2021

April 22nd is a pretty important day for some of our patients. It’s National Beagle Day! These sweet, lovable pups make very cheerful and happy family pets. Fido definitely deserves a day in the spot light! A local vet discusses this adorable breed in this article.

History

The Beagle’s origins are shrouded in mystery. Even the origin of their name is obscure. The word Beagle could have originated from the word beag, which was Gaelic for ‘little.’ It might also stand for be’geule, which is a French ‘translation’ of the sound hunting dogs make. In any case, it appears that these faithful pooches have been around for quite a while. Records of hounds being used for hunting in Britain predate the arrival of the Romans, which happened way back in 55 BC. Things get somewhat clearer after the Civil War. The AKC officially registered the first Beagle, a pup named Blunder, in 1885.

Grooming

Beagle coats are often a mix or two or three colors. These can range from lemon yellow to red and white to chocolate. As you may know, these guys have adorable floppy ears. You’ll need to keep Fido’s ears clean. Like all dogs with folded ears, Beagles are prone to ear infections. Regular brushing is also a must. They shed continuously through the year, but they shed the most heavily in spring. Dental care and nail trims are also important. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Hound Dog

The Beagle is a scenthound. That cute little nose is great for tracking. Fido is also a foothound, which means he can be followed on foot. This particular trait was once highly valued. Back in the old days, many people hunted their food. Many people were unable to afford their own horses. This made hunting more difficult. However, people with Beagles could keep up with their quarries on foot.

Beagles are notorious for following their noses, and are a bit prone to running off after scents. Don’t let Fido run around off-leash! If you have a yard, make sure that your fencing is secure.

Activity

Beagles aren’t very large, but they’re very active, and need lots of exercise and playtime. They’re also extremely sociable, and tend to get into trouble when left alone. Make sure your canine companion has a buddy!

Snoopy

We can’t really talk about Beagles without mentioning the most famous one ever: Snoopy! Charlie Brown’s furry best buddy was first drawn back in 1950. If you want to see something really cute, look up the animated video of the iconic pair meeting for the first time.
