Puppy and Kitten Care Tips for Your New Pet

Posted on 2012-04-18 14:53:28

puppy and kitten care needs.jpgWhether you are getting your first pet or adding to your family of existing pets, getting a new puppy or kitten is an exciting time. However, the first few months of a new dog or cat's life set the premise for a lifetime of good health, which is why it is important that you learn proper puppy and kitten care as soon as you bring your new pet home.

One of the first things you should do after you get your new pet is schedule an appointment with a veterinarian. If you live in or around the North Miami Beach area, Dr. Williams is experienced in puppy and kitten wellness and can help ensure that your pet is healthy and protected against anything that could present a health threat to your dog or cat in the future.

Your pet may need to be treated for worms or parasites, and we recommend that you spay and neuter you pet early to help reduce the risk of testicular cancer, breast cancer and ovarian cancer. Spay and neuter procedures are easy to recover from during the first few months of life, and are most beneficial to your pet if performed early or before the first heat cycle.

The Importance of Pet Vaccinations

Here at Arch Creek Animal Clinic, we are strong proponents of pet vaccinations. In fact, your pet should receive his or her first round of vaccinations at just a few weeks old, after which time we recommend following up with booster shots. Not all vaccinations are necessary for every pet, although the core vaccination schedule is a must for any pet. Core vaccines include the rabies vaccination, distemper vaccination, Parvovirus and hepatitis vaccination.

Other vaccines are optional, and our animal clinic staff can advise you on which ones are necessary for your pet. These include the canine influenza and bordetella vaccine. These types of vaccines are recommended only to pets considered high risk for developing the diseases.

Do you or does someone you know have a new puppy or kitten? What tips would you give to them?

This problem and other oral problems such as plaque and tarter can pose serious threats to the health of your animal. Our North Miami Beach veterinarian will teach you how to identify and prevent dental problems in your pet at home so that you know when to bring them in for medical attention.

North Miami Beach Veterinarian Emphasizes the Importance of Pet Vaccinations

Posted on 2012-01-31 13:58:50

pet vaccinations in North Miami Beach.jpgKeeping current on your pet vaccinations is essential to your pet's wellness, longevity and overall quality of life. Most animal clinic’s recommend annual visits to make sure your dog or cat's shots are up to date and to help catch any health issues early.

Common Dog Vaccinations

At Arch Creek Animal Clinic, we administer two primary categories of vaccines for dogs — core and non-core. The core vaccines are the ones recommended for most dogs. These consist of parvovirus, distemper, canine hepatitis, and rabies. Most states require you to have your dog vaccinated against rabies. Some require yearly immunizations; others have an every three year requirement. Whether your dog should get any non-core pet vaccinations depends on his or her risk of exposure. Common non-core vaccines include Bordetella bronchiseptica, Borrelia burgdorferi, and Leptospira bacteria.

Our veterinarian in North Miami Beach will discuss your particular dog's needs with you and map out an immunization plan that best suits his or her needs. Puppies are particularly vulnerable to infection. Most animal clinics, including ours, recommend that they get shots early, in the first few months of life.

Common Cat Vaccinations

As with dogs, vaccines are important to boosting your cat's immune response to certain potentially life-threatening diseases and are at the core of any wellness cat care program. At our North Miami Beach animal clinic, we will discuss your cat's individual needs and lifestyle and tailor a vaccine schedule just for him or her. Recommended vaccines for cats include rabies, Feline Panleukopenia, and Feline Calicivirus/Herpesvirus. Whether your cat should get non-core vaccines depends on whether he or she is an indoor-only cat and on his or her exposure to our non-household pets. Non-core vaccines include Feline Leukemia, Chlamydia, Feline Infectious Peritonitis, and Ringworm.

Kitties, like puppies, are especially susceptible to infectious diseases. Our veterinarian recommends that kittens get their first vaccines at 6 to 8 weeks of age.

Do you keep up on vaccinations for your dog or cat? Do you make it a part of your pet's annual wellness routine?

Food equals love

Posted on 2011-09-21 07:33:11

I love my cat and dog.  Yet life keeps me busy. I rush out in the morning am dead tired in the evening. I just want to be a couch potatoe on my days off. So is it so wrong of me to ease my guilt by giving a 1/2 cup extra food? I would gladly be swayed to forgive via cookies and cupcakes.
